Three excellent proposals for improving the polls of K-12 teachers in the US: 1. Identify good candidates early and steer them towards education careers, 2. Increase the rigor of training, including 1 year field residencies, and 3. Make teacher pay competitive with other career fields.
In my opinion, the third point is the most critical. Educating tomorrow’s workers and citizens is an incredibly important and challenging job. We’re counting on people to take on this often thankless talk out of their commitment to the greater good, and demanding no such sacrifice of ourselves, our government officials, the students’ eventual employers, or even the student’s themselves. You can identify people who would make good teachers, but if, as is implied, they are the best and brightest, they’re going to spend their money on an education that will offer some returns, particularly if the education itself become more demanding. Increasing the rigor of the training without increasing the post-training compensation may very well lead to a deficit of teachers.
